Summer ReadingThe NKHS Summer Reading Program --2007

This year’s summer reading program is similar to last year’s but with a few changes.  The purpose of a summer reading program is to encourage all students to read and to develop into lifelong readers. To that end, the requirements are that students read one book of their choice, write a literature letter to submit to their English teacher on the first day of school and be ready to introduce themselves and their book that first day of class.

Some questions you might have…and some answers:

1. How many books?  At least one.

2. Which book should I read?  That is your choice. Pick a book that interests you, is age-appropriate, and has your parent/guardian approval. It can be fiction or nonfiction.

3. Where can I get a suggestion? Ask your teachers, friends, parents, or librarians, or check the school website.

4. What do I do when I finish the book? You are to write or type a literature letter, which is a letter about the book and your reading, to a person or character in the book.  Your letter should give good details and cover, by paragraph:

First paragraph:  Explain to the person or character why you are writing to him or her.  Make sure you include the title and author of the book and your reasons for reading the book in the first place.

Second paragraph: Copy one passage from the book that you think expresses the character particularly well.  Explain how it is so appropriate in the context of the whole book.

Third paragraph:  Ask your character a question, either about why he or she took a certain course of

action, how he or she felt in response to something in the book, or some other suitable concern.

Fourth paragraph:   Tell your character why he or she makes you recommend the book to someone you know.  Explain why that person would enjoy getting to know the same character.  At the end of the paragraph, wrap it up by summarizing your response to the book as a whole.

5. When is the Literature Letter due?  First day of English class.

6. How much is it worth? It is EXTRA CREDIT -- worth up to 3 points added onto your first quarter grade.  (3 points = letter follows directions and gives good evidence of reading; 2 points = letter follows directions and gives evidence of reading; 1 point = letter gives evidence of reading the book but does not follow directions)
