English/Language Arts Curriculum
The attainment of proficiency in the English/Language Arts Curriculum is an important goal for all students. To read and interpret the works of others, to listen critically and evaluate all manner of oral presentations, to write clearly and compellingly for a multitude of purposes, and to speak confidently and convincingly are all necessary components of our ability to communicate with one another. A complete curriculum will assist students in attaining language arts proficiency which is critical to success in every field.
The English/Language Arts curriculum for grades six through twelve in North Kingstown has been based on the New Standards Performance Standards and the Rhode Island Department of Education Language Arts Frameworks. This curriculum addresses all four areas of the language arts Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Grammar and usage skills are integrated into each grade level and writing is an integral part of each grades curriculum.
Students will read, study, reflect upon, and react to many different genre of literature and other print materials. The instruction they receive will be varied to meet different learning styles but all students will have the opportunity to participate in flexible grouping, cooperative learning, independent study, individualized instruction, hands on learning, and whole class instruction. They will also be able to demonstrate skill development and content knowledge in a variety of ways such as portfolio development, oral presentations, standardized assessments, practical applications, and other authentic forms of assessment.
This curriculum reflects the beliefs of the North Kingstown School Department Statement that " All students are capable of learning and becoming self-directed learners," and " All students have a desire to learn".
