HyperStudio is presentation software. The presentation consists of cards which, when grouped together, are referred to as a stack. You move among cards through the use of buttons. One of the nice features of HyperStudio is that the progression through the stack does not have to be linear. In addition, HyperStudio stacks may be interactive. HyperStudio provides lots of assistance through the use of a guide, Addy, and step by step instructions as you create your stack. If you do not like this type of help, just choose "I am an experienced HyperStudio user" under Preferences located under the Edit menu.

Getting Started

1. Open the program by clicking on HyperStudio and choose "home stack".

2. Choose New Stack. This will launch a new, untitled stack.

3. "Tear" the Tools menu and place it on the desktop so it will be available to you. When working with HS you will be either in the BROWSE mode (hand in upper left of the tools menu), or the EDIT mode (arrow in the upper right of the tools menu). You will use browse mode when you are moving through your stack, checking buttons, etc; you will use the edit mode when you are creating and changing your stack.

4. Three other edit buttons are Button edit, Graphic object edit, and Text object edit.

Creating a Project: Step by Step:

1. Choose New Stack from File menu. This will give you a blank card to create this project.

2. Add a colored background. From Edit menu choose Erase Background.  Select a color. Click OK and your card will become that color.

3. Add a title using the Text tool (T). When you use the text tool it is like using oil paint. Once you click away, you cannot make changes without deleting and starting again. From Options menu choose Text Style. Choose the size, color and font that you want. After making your selections, use the Text tool, locate the cursor where you would like the title to be, and type "African Safari".

4. Add clip art. From File menu choose Add Clip Art. You will then see a dialog box

which asks you the source of your picture. We will choose "disk file" and then select

Africa from within the HyperStudio art folder. (It may go there automatically) Use one of the selector tools (dotted rectangle or lasso) to select all or some of this picture and then click OK. The image will

appear on your card surrounded by flashing red lines. This means that you can

move it and place it on the card. You may also resize the image by  choosing Effects Scale and Rotate from the Edit menu. You must do this while the red lines are still flashing. Click away when you are satisfied with placement and appearance.

5. Add a new card. From the Edit menu choose New Card. Choose Import Background from the file menu. Select Disk File as your source and then Computer 2 from the HS art folder. Click Open. When you use the import background option the image will fill the entire screen. We want to use only the border, so we will select (using the rectangular selection tool on the tools menu) and delete everything in the center.

6. Add a button. Move back to card 1. Select Previous Card from the Move menu. Choose Add a Button from the Objects menu. You will then be presented with the Button Appearance dialog box. There are 8 button types: the four on the top are visible while the four on the bottom are invisible. Choose one of the visible buttons. Write the name "Let's go" on the button. Choose a color for the text and a complementary color for the background. You may add an icon (picture) to your button by clicking on icons at the bottom of the screen and choosing a picture. After you have made your selections click OK. Your button will now be floating on the card waiting to be placed. Place it in the lower right. When you click off the button you will be presented with the Actions dialog box. You will make two decisions here: where to go when the button is clicked and things to do. On the Places to Go side choose Next Card. You will then be given some choices concerning the Transition from this slide to the next. Select a transition and then click OK, then done. In browse mode, test your button.

7. Edit a button to add sound. You may edit a button after it has been created by choosing the button edit tool and double clicking on the button. At the button appearance screen choose Actions. On the "things to do" side select Play a Sound; this will bring you to the Tape Deck where you may either record a message or select a sound. Select a sound. Click OK, then done.

8. Add a Graphic Object. From the Objects menu choose add a graphic object. Choose disk file and then select Animals from HS art. Using either the rectangular or lasso selection tool, choose the elephant. Click OK and then place the picture where you want on the screen. When you do this you will be presented with the Graphic Appearance screen. Name the object. Repeat the process adding at least two pictures to your card.

*Note: when you add an image as a graphic object rather than clip art, you can do different things with it.

9. Add a Text Object. From the Objects menu choose add a text object. The flashing box shows the size and location of the text box you will create. Make the box the size and shape you want and move it to a location you desire. When you click away you will be presented with a Text Appearance screen. From text style screen choose the color of your text box, text color etc. You may also make decisions about whether you want the text box to be scrollable, etc. Once you have made your selections, type a paragraph about Africa. Make sure you include the word  "elephant" in your paragraph.

10. Add a Hypertext link. We will make a hypertext link out of the word "elephant" which, when clicked, will make the picture appear. Select the word "elephant" by dragging the mouse; underline the word to indicate that it is a link. Underline by selecting Text Style from the Options menu. Once the phrase is highlighted choose Hypertext links from Objects menu. "Elephant" will appear in lower window; click on Add Link. Click on Action. From the Actions dialog box choose New Button Actions from the Things to Do side. Choose HideShow from the list. Click "use this NBA". Name it, identify it as a graphic object, choose Òshow itÓ and  then done.

11. Hide an object when leaving a card. In order for a picture to appear on a screen when you click on a link you must hide it when you leave the card. There are several ways to do this. One way is to select About this Card from the Objects menu. Click on things to do when leaving this card. At Actions choose New Button Actions and then HideShow. Select "use this NBA"; name the object "elephant"; indicate that it is a graphic and that it should be hidden.

12. Add another card (card 3). Move back to card two. Link cards two and three with a button as we did before. Try a different type of button this time.

13. Animation: Place a button on card three. Add the text "click" to the button.  At the Actions screen choose Play Animation. Indicate that you will get the graphic from disk, then select butterfly 2. When the image appears, hold down the mouse and create a path for the object (butterfly)  to follow. From Path Options you customize the animation to suit your taste.

14. Play a QuickTime Movie. Add another card (card 4).  Add a Button from the Objects menu. Make the button an invisible rectangle, then select an appropriate icon.. Place it on the left center of the card. At the Actions screen choose Play a Movie or Video from the "things to do" side. From the movies folder choose Saturn Movie. Click Open. Place the movie in the upper left-hand corner of the card. When you click away the flashing lines will disappear and you will be presented with the QT movies dialog box. Here you may preview the movie and make choices about its appearance. Click OK and then done at the actions screen when you have made your selections.

15. Roll Credits: on Card 4 choose Add a Text Object from the Objects menu. At the text appearance screen make choices about color, size font etc. You will also need to name this text box. Call it Credits.

Select Actions and from Things to Do select New Button Actions and then Roll Credits. You can experiment with the timing etc. but to start set # of steps at 0, speed 2 scrolls pixels, # pixels = 3. Click OK and Done until you arrive back at your card. Select the text tool and write a paragraph giving yourself credit for the project.  It is a good idea to leave a couple of blank lines before you begin your text. You also want to have enough text so that it makes sense to "roll the credits". Use a large font!

15. Extras Menu: Under "extras" you will find several useful tools. One is spell check. The other is a storyboard. With storyboard you can see all of the cards in your stack and can rearrange them if you would like.

Ghost Writer: (If time permits ) Ghost writer is a feature which can be used to make text automatically appear (and disappear!) in a text box. Add a text box from the Objects menu as we did on the previous card. Choose text style in the same manner. At the Text Appearance dialog box choose the Actions button, then choose New Button Actions under things to do. From the list of New Button Actions in the upper left-hand corner choose Ghost Writer and then "use this NBA". Type in the text you want to appear. If you want the text to disappear, you must type in the @ symbol, one for each letter.

**Remember: Use the HAND, the browse tool, to Play your stack

                        Use the ARROW to edit

Congratulations! You have completed your first HyperStudio project. On your own add another card to this stack or begin an entirely new stack!
