   The NKHS Career Center

The North Kingstown High School Career Center (NKCC) is a wonderful new resource for NKHS students, faculty, staff, and parents. The Center provides information associated with post secondary planning: two and four year colleges, vocational and technical schools, apprenticeship programs, civilian and military careers, scholarships and financial aid, job and summer opportunities.

All students, regardless of their background, academic achievement, or economic status are given the opportunity to develop plans for the future that take into account their interests and abilities, current trends in education, the economy and the job market.

The NKHS Career Center does not replace the services of your guidance counselor, it enhances them.

All students are encouraged to visit the NKCC during lunch and after school. All grade levels are scheduled into the Career Center for college and career units during advisory. Parents are also welcome during the school day, but are encouraged to contact the NKCC in advance to be sure there are no classes scheduled into the Center using the resources.

Visiting Career and College Representatives

The Center is host to College Admission Representatives during the Fall and numerous career and military representatives will make presentations to interested students throughout the year. This year, monthly career visits by working practitioners are being planned focusing on:

  • Business

  • Science/Technology

  • Health

  • Law Enforcement

College Representative Visits

Senior students are highly encouraged to meet with the College Reps if they intend on applying to those schools. After scheduling appointments in advance, the Reps meet with prospective applicants to their college; these Reps are often the “readers” of the student’s application, so it helps to match a name with a face if you are a prospective applicant. College Rep visits are published in the morning announcements and uploaded to the guidance website each week.

Students must sign up in advance in the Career Center for career and college rep visits.

Appointments are available for students and parents/guardians wanting to use the resources of the NKCC after school. Over 25 LINKS parent volunteers will be there to assist in the day to day operations of the center to assist with your college and career information needs.

Career Center Services

Some of the resources and services that we make available to all NKHS students and families are:

  • Two computers for the use of Career activities

  • A college and career video and CD library

  • SAT and ACT registration materials

  • Career information and preparation materials

  • Online interest and aptitude inventories

  • College and financial aid search engines

  • College catalogs

  • College and scholarship applications

  • Guidebooks

In addition, the Guidance Department staff are planning special workshops to assist students with topics such as filling out financial aid forms and writing college essays. These workshops  will be presented during advisory, lunchtime and after school for interested students.

Career Center Bulletins

College visits, career cluster visits, college fairs and other weekend or evening programs in the North Kingstown area will be advertised in the bi-weekly Career Center bulletin, which is given to seniors in their advisory on a semi-weekly basis and also available at the Career Center.

A comprehensive Scholarship Guide is also distributed by the Career Center each year, and is available in the Career Center and on the guidance website as well.

The NKHS Career Center is staffed Wednesday and Thursday at lunchtime, Tuesday and Thursday 2:00-4:00 and one night a month (TBD).
