Student Attendance

North Kingstown High School is scheduled for a 180 day school year. To ensure academic success, students are expected to be in attendance every day, and to report to every class during the school day. It is the parent(s)'/guardian(s)' responsibility to notify the high school when their child is going to be absent (268-6239).

It is the intent of this policy that staff and parents work cooperatively to ensure the regular attendance of our students in school, and to maintain close communication between home and school regarding student attendance.

  1. It is essential that all NKHS students be on time and attend all of their classes daily. Students will not be admitted after 10:30 AM unless accompanied by a parent, or they provide an appropriate doctor's note or copy of court papers.
  2. Parents/guardians must call if their child is going to be absent on any given day and send a note explaining the reason for the absence (s) when their child returns to school.
  3. Parents who call their children in as sick on a regular basis will be referred to guidance for a conference with school officials to determine if medical attention is required.

Appropriate accommodations will be made under ADA and section 504.

    4.    Family vacations are not encouraged during non-school vacation times.

The Jewish high holy days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kipper will be appropriately marked on the official school calendar. To the extent practical, no new work, testing, or any unique school event will be scheduled for the evening prior and the days of those observances. Students required to absent themselves from school for religious observances should not be restricted from awards for otherwise perfect attendance.

Tardies To School

It is essential that all students at NKHS be on time for school and for all of their classes daily. For being tardy to school each day, the following rules will be applied by semester:

  1. Students will be assigned an office detention for tardies #3 and 4
  2. On the 5th tardy per semester, students will receive a Saturday detention and the parents will be notified. For seniors, it will also mean the loss of their parking privileges for thirty days.
  3. For tardies #6, 7, 8 and 9, students will be placed in an exclusion room and the parents will be notified.
  4. Upon the 10th tardy to school and for each subsequent tardy, the student must be accompanied by a parent to be admitted to school. Note: Tardies may also have an effect on absences for the quarter if the student misses more than half of a class period.

Tardies To Class

For being tardy to any class each day, a similar policy to the stated above will be applied.

  1. On the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tardy to any class, the classroom teacher will assign a classroom detention and may call home on the matter.
  2. Students who miss classroom detentions should be referred to the Assistant Principals' Office..
  3. Students late to class without a pass should not be sent to the Assistant Principal's Office. Classroom teachers should accept a pass from any teacher, but a students without a pass should be given a penalty per the classroom teacher's rules and regulations.
  4. Upon the 4th tardy to class, teachers should refer the student to the Assistant Principal's Office. The student may be placed in an exclusion room and the parent will be notified.

Cutting Class: Each teacher will keep a record of attendance. Class cuts will result in a zero for the day.

Early Dismissal

With the exception of cases pertaining to health or emergency, students will not be dismissed from school during the school day without prior written consent from parents or guardians. A phone number must be included on the note for verification. Students are to submit dismissal requests to the Assistant Principals' Office no later than 7:30 AM for verification and approval. The names of students and dismissal times will be included on the daily attendance bulletin. Students must report to the Assistant Principals' Office and the parent will sign out the student before leaving the campus. Students will sign back in if returning to school before the school day ends. Students submitting forged early dismissal notes will be subject to disciplinary action.

Every effort should be made to schedule doctor/dentist appointments after school hours.

NOTE: Students 18 years of age or older must have an early dismissal note signed by a parent. Parents must indicate that they approve students driving themselves. Non-driving students must be picked up by a parent/guardian.

On Prom Days, no student attending the prom, will be granted an early dismissal.
