About Stony Lane
|
|
| Stony Lane was opened 1971. The building is open concept in design. The open design allows for flexible use of space, furniture and equipment to accommodate different learning situations and needs. Moveable partitions can accommodate small group or large group instruction, and also provide secluded study areas. | |
| In
1996 an extensive addition allowed for a new grade 1 area, gymnasium, art
and music rooms and small group rooms. The completed building can comfortable
accommodate 21 classes. Our enrollment this year is 420 students in 19 classes. |
|
| All classrooms have at least three state of the art computers linked to the internet. Additional computers are located in the media center. Other computers are available for word processing and instructional in the lab. The computer lab is furnished with 26 computers, printers and a large screen monitor projector. | |
| There is an extensive nature trail beyond the tree line at the rear of the school property. There are also children's gardens located at the right side of the building. The playground was installed in 1999 by parents, teachers and community members. | |
| We continue to have the Reading Recovery Program in first grade and a literacy program in first through third grades. There is a technology educator to assist teachers in this area. Special services are also offered to qualifying students. PTO sponsors a Cultural Arts Program. | |
| There is an active PTO and parent volunteer program. Parents assist students in the library, on computers, with reading, handwriting, and other academic activities. Parents may be quest speakers, assist with special events, assist teachers with projects and volunteer for PTO sponsored events. You will be hearing from LINKS (our volunteer program) shortly. The PTO will also notify you of its meetings. | |
| Stony Lane also participates in special events and programs which may interest your child. There is an after school "Stony Lane University" coordinated by parents which is held several times during the school year. There is a chorus program for all students grade 1-5 and instrumental instruction is offered in fifth grade. We participate in Junior Achievement, Feinstein Good Deeds Program, Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, DARE, Destination Imagination, Book IT, Box Tops for Education, President's Academic Achievement Award and other state and national programs. We hold two (2) concerts, a variety show and a third grade musical play in which our students participate. | |
| Our Business/Educational Partnership is with Narragansett Electric. The SPOUTER, our school newsletter is distributed monthly with the PTO newsletter. At the beginning of each month you receive our monthly calendar of events and meetings. We also offer a listserv for your convenience. This "announce only" list will alert you to items sent via "backpack mail" as well as to other timely events and/or news. Please subscribe if you have not already done so. The school mascot is the whale and the school colors are blue and white. Friday is staff "Dress Down for Charity" day." Each morning two students announce birthdays, special activities, the day's song and the lunch menu. Every class has a turn beginning with fifth graders. If your child has received a special award or accomplishment outside of school, please send in a brief note and he/she will be recognized during this time. The school's web page can be found at www.nksd.net. | |
