Parent Page

This page is for parents. I do not give homework because all students do not have access to a computer. For the parents who would like their child to practice at home, you have two choices. The first, have your child ask me for practice pages. These are simply pages I have copied. Students will practice these at home at their leisure. The second, if you have access to a highspeed internet line then you may go to the following sites.

Students in my 6th grade class searched and evaluated, in their own words, Internet sites where they could practice their skills.

The Criteria

  • Must be user friendly. It should not take long to figure out what to do.
  • Must have a shelf life. Students can not be bored after a short amount of time.
  • If you must register, it must be easy.

The Sites

  • www.typingmaster.com (Jeff and Eric rated it a 10 out of 10. Really fun and no registration)
  • www.learn2type.com (Christina says, "An 8.7 out of 10. It is efficient but the way they present it is slacking a bit. The important thing is that it works well and you will learn to type, despite the rather drab pages. The program may take a small while to learn but it is worth the wait." Max gave this 3 out of 5 stars. "The pros are many different ways to practice typing and the speed tests; the cons are the site is unattractive, confusing to use and you must register to use.")
  • www.ten-fingers.com (Chiara says, "This site has many games such as snake, character, word, and chartcars. My favorite is Snake. It is extremely fun! The point of Snake is to try to gain stripes of blue and red. The way you get stripes is when you key in the letter the computer game says to. There are 20 lessons. I would give this website two thumbs up!") On further review of this site, you must download (2mb) the free software. If you do not want to download, this will not be the best choice for you.
  • www.mrkent.com/kb/kbtest.htm (Max rates this 4 out of 5 stars. He says, "The pros are its ease of use and the attractive interface; the cons are that it requires you to type in your e-mail to use it.")

Any parent wishing to volunteer in the classroom should contact me through e-mail or through your son or daughter. There are approximately 31 classes in the trimester. If you have an idea that will aid in the teaching of a particular area, or if you work in the business or computer field and would like to teach a lesson to the children, I would love to hear your ideas.

I would like to thank Renee Cockerill for her time in my classroom. Renee helped evaluate students technique. Volunteering in the class is just one more way to be involved in the educational system. Volunteers make the school a better place to be.
