Online Project Sites


Online projects are an excellent way for students to connect with other students as well as subject matter experts as they engage in authentic learning activities. Listed below are some excellent sites for online projects.
Kid Projects
Projects organized by starting times. This site also allows you to create and submit a project with ease. Many elementary projects are found here.This site promotes many excellent projects which have a focus on volunteerism and humanitarianism.

A one-stop project site. Browse past projects or preview upcoming ones. From easy to complex ther is a project for everyone here
 
IECC
IECC is intended for teachers seeking partner classrooms for international and cross-cultural electronic mail exchanges. Many projects run annually.

UN CyberSchoolBus
A very comprehensive site. Interactive sections in Quiz Quad and changing projects. Current project is one on Global Human Rights.

Specific Projects:


Community Atlas Project
Using GIS and online mapping sites, students create profiles of their communities. Some projects address issues of environmental concern and use maps to illustrate the problem and offer solutions.

Jason Project
This project is Led by Dr. Robert Ballard and is currently in its 15th year. Students have the ability to interact with research scientists as they explore some of the world's most intriguing regions. This year the Jason project will visit the rainforests of Panama.

Global Sun Temperature Project
In this project students from around the world keep investigate the influence of geographic location on temperature and hours of sunlight. This project is an annual favorite of many teachers and students.

ISS EarthKAM Project
In this project students target specific areas on the earth's surface and request that images be taken remotely from the International Space Station. Photographs are then made available on the Internet.


Webquests


A webquest is an activity where some or all of the information is obtained through the internet. Typically webquests are focused on an "essential question" which require students to organize and analyze information to arrive at new understandings.They are a great way to investigate many topics as they force students to examine subjects from different points of view and arrive at their own conclusions. The links below show both the "how to" of webquests and give some examples of webquests you may want to try with your classes.

This page, created by WebQuest founder Dr. Bernie Dodge, is the main WebQuest resource on the Net, with training materials for teachers and links to numerous WebQuests they have designed.

This site offers expert advice by Tom March on developing WebQuests and the theory behind this learning strategy. Examples and descriptions for each element of a WebQuest are included.


 
Lesson Sites and Teaching Tools


Marco Polo, Internet content for the Classroom: an outstanding site which contains lessons, student activities and professionally reviewed sites. MArco Polo has 7 outstanding partner sites which include Arts Edge, Econ EdLink, Illuminations (NCTM site), Science NetLinks, Xpeditions (National Geographic), Read, Write, Think (International Reading Association), and EdSitement. It should be a "first stop" on the Internet for all teachers.
Blue Web'N is a searchable database of over 1,000 blue-ribbon Internet learning sites. It is organized by subject, grade level, and type of learning opportunity (lessons, activities, projects, resources, references, and tools).

Smithsonian Education: gateway to Smithsonian educational resources with sections for educators, students and families

RIBIT (Reusable Internet-Based Inquiry Template) is an online template where teachers create and store inquiry-based lessons using the Internet

Smithsonian Games: A great site with a variety of games focused on science and history.
APlus Math: This excellent site has a number of games to improve your math skills.
CyberSchoolBus: Games which focus on science and social studies.
The Factor Game:
interactive game which exercises students' factoring ability.
Fake Out Vocabulary Game: Choose a level and test your voabulary IQ! Words change weekly.
National Geographic Explorer: Online version of the magazine. Games, mysteries, movies and more.
Interactive Games: an extensive collection of games which reinforce math skills. In addition to playing the games, students may create their own!

How Everyday Things are Made: Not exactly a game site, but very interesting videos about the manufacture of many items.
