Geography Bee 2004

Each year the National Geographic Society sponsors a compeptition for students in grades 4-8. The first level of the competition occurs in schools across the USA, US territories, and Department of Defense schools. The winner from each school then takes a written test. The top 100 students in each state and territtory then compete in a state championship. This competition will take place on April 2, 2004 at Rhode Island College. The winner of the state competition will then travel, all expenses paid, to Washington D.C. to compete for the national championship. The national competition, will take place on May 25th and May 26th, 2004. Alex Trebek, host of Jeopardy, will serve as the MC. The competition is rigorous from the preliminary classroom elimination rounds to the national championship round. The three national winners receive college scholarships of $10,000 for third place, $15,000 for second place, and $25,000 for first place. The National Geographic Society hopes that the National Geography Bee will encourage geography education in our nation's schools.
