Mrs. Davis' LA Class Special Project

The metamorphosis of the monarch from caterpillar to butterfly:

Mrs. Davis‚ Language Arts students observed a Monarch Caterpillar‚s metamorphosis during September and early October. On September 27, the day that Charles H. brought in the caterpillar, it was already in a J shape. That same day it turned into the pupa, or chrysalis stage. It shed its black and yellow stripes and became a greenish color. Then it formed two gold dots and grew a silver line. We observed this on the 28th of September.

The next stage we observed was the pupa stage when the chrysalis turned transparent on Friday, October 7.  We thought it would come out of its chrysalis over the weekend.

Instead, that same day it came out of its chrysalis at 9:30.

Later on, at 10:30, we brought the butterfly outside and watched her slowly climb a tree.

At approximately 12:15 we saw the Monarch rise into the air and fly away. It was very exciting and we enjoyed watching the whole process.
