The mathematics team at WMS consists of three teachers. Miss Clays teaches 3 sections of 7th grade math and 2 sections of 8th grade algebra 1; Mrs. Jablonski teaches 2 sections of 8th grade advanced algebra, 1 section of 8th grade pre-algebra and 2 sections of 7th grade pre-algebra; Miss Laczynski teaches 2 sections of 7th grade pre-algebra, 1 section of 7th grade math and 2 sections of 8th grade pre-algebra.
The mathematics teachers share a common planning time which allows them to coordinate instruction across grades and teams. They are focusing on improving the students' problem solving scores on the state assessment. Towards that end they have instituted a Problem of the Week component in all math classes; it will count for 15% of the quarterly grade. Beginning with the second quarter all students will be given a problem of the week every other week. The problem will be distributed on Wednesday and students will have until the following Wednesday to complete the problem. In addition to providing valuable practice in problem solving, this component of the math program is intended to increase writing in the mathematics content area. Writing across the curriculum is one of the major WMS goals this year. Click here for problem of the week directions and grading rubric.
In April the math team is planning a Fun Family Math Night. On Halloween Miss Clays gave an indication of the fun loving nature of the math team with the math-inspired costume below. Everyone at WMS is looking forward to an April evening filled with mathematics fun!
