Elementary Schools Boundaries Realignment Proposal

Update 2/28/2019

NKSD Parents:

Attached is an amended version of OPTION 2 (sent earlier this week). There are two amendments on this new draft:

  1. This draft adds Railroad Avenue, Hidden Lake Drive, and Liberty Road to the group to transfer from Stony Lane El to Hamilton El.  This group was mistakenly left of the previous OPTION 2 draft.
  2. This draft also changes previous language about those who choose to grandfather to current school. Parents must transport to the school.  With a larger transfer group, we cannot accommodate transporting to the closest available bus stop as previously mentioned.

I apologize for any confusion. All other OPTION 2 Details remain the same.  As noted below, this topic will be on the NKSC agenda March 12 and March 26.

Update 2/26/2019

Members of the NKSD Committee:

To keep you up to date with the School Committee discussion over resetting elementary school boundaries, the School Committee has now met twice on the matter and has asked to another option which includes the Glen Neighborhood also being included in the redistricting from Stony Lane El to Hamilton El.  A full list of all streets affected is listed under Option 2.  Both the original and Option 2 can include the possibility of grandfathering students from grades 3 through 5 instead of just grade 5 as stated in the original option.

Full details for both options are attached.

Out of respect for community members who may now be included in the redistricting and to keep this process open, the School Committee has decided to continue the discussion at both it's March 12 and March 26 meetings. A vote is planned on the 26th.  Both meetings will be held at the NKHS auditorium at 7pm, and citizens comments are welcomed.

Also, if you should have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact my office.

Phil Auger

The meeting will feature a presentation and proposal from Superintendent Auger to make two elementary zone adjustments starting in the 2019-20 school year. The adjustments are needed to address enrollment projections which, if not addressed, will send Forest Park El over capacity, Stony Lane El very near capacity, and Hamilton El very low compared to our other Els.  Details of the proposal, including names of streets affected by the proposed changes, are attached.  A map of the proposed zones is also attached.  The areas highlighted in yellow and pink on the map are the only realigned neighborhoods. The NK School Committee will keep this proposal as an agenda topic for its next three meetings before it takes a vote on the matter, thus ensuring community members have the opportunity to provide feedback.
